The Raft of the Medusa

I am stunned by this. I have to admit that I did not know of it until just a few moments ago. I was vaguely aware of Gericault. But I have always associated him with somewhat insipid French Revolution paintings and things like portraits of men on horseback. Nothing like this!

My graduate student Servet is working on a project which involves looking at the structure of narrative. His approach is text based, however following him has been giving me some vague ideas about looking at how narrative also very often becomes visual. How that actually works. In fact, I have been meaning to take some old master paintings which are the prime examples to that and trying to decipher their narrative structure through superimposed diagrams and such. This painting epitomizes what I have been groping around with in my head.
